The Engineering Mathematics Program at UNC Charlotte offers middle school students (grades 6-8) an engaging opportunity to explore the intersection of mathematics, engineering, and scientific inquiry. Through hands-on, standards-aligned activities, students will build foundational STEM skills. The program integrates North Carolina mathematics standards with engineering principles and Science Olympiad-style challenges. Activities include direct instruction, problem-based learning, and cooperative learning techniques. Students will tackle challenging math and science problems, conduct experiments, solve mathematical puzzles, and engage in inquiry-based learning. Collaborative learning activities foster teamwork through group projects and team-based challenges, preparing students for Science Olympiad competitions. Each in-person session includes instruction by certified mathematics instructors or graduate students, with a focus on real-world applications of engineering and mathematics through guest speakers.
A typical in-person session includes 1.5 hours of instruction, a 15-minute break, and another 1.5 hours of instruction, focusing on interactive lessons, hands-on activities, and problem-solving exercises. Virtual Thursdays feature a STEM professional guest speaker.
