The iD Tech BattleBots® Robotics Engineering Camp at Davidson College offers an immersive experience where campers design, build, and program custom BattleBots®. Utilizing VEX Robotics and 3D printing, students construct their fighting robots from the ground up, starting with a metal chassis and DC motors. They wire electrical components, including a circuit board, microcontroller, and motor driver, and program their bots using VEX C++ to respond to wireless controller input. Campers also learn to operate 3D printers to manufacture custom armor and attachments, iterating on their designs between battles. The week culminates in a BattleBots®-style tournament where students face off against peers in challenges like racing, obstacle courses, and capture the flag, gaining practical engineering and programming skills.
A typical day includes morning announcements and icebreakers, followed by focused coursework in course groups. After lunch in the campus dining hall, campers return for more instruction, a computer break with outdoor time or board games, and then continue working on projects before wrap-up and pick-up.
This camp is ideal for middle and high school students (ages 13-17) who are interested in robotics, engineering, 3D printing, and competitive challenges, regardless of their prior experience.
